Steve Wilks Out As 49ers Defensive Coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers have relieved defensive coordinator Steve Wilks of his duties after just one season in the role. During the regular season, the Wilks-led Niners defense ranked eighth in total yards allowed per game (303.9) and third in points per game allowed (17.5). However, the San Francisco stop unit allowed 409.0 yards per game and 25.7 points per game in three postseason contests against the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Kansas City Chiefs. The move is somewhat of a surprise, but now Wilks should be in demand as a defensive assistant. The 54-year-old has had success in recent years with the Carolina Panthers.
