Former New England Patriots defensive play-caller Steve Belichick, the son of former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, is expected to become the new defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies, according to a program source. The 36-year-old called the Patriots' defense for the last four seasons and had coached in New England since 2012 and worked with Washington head coach Jedd Fisch in 2020 when Fisch was the Patriots quarterbacks coach. Former Patriots assistant coach Vinnie Sunseri is also heading to Washington as a defensive coach. In 2023, three of the top eight-ranked defenses in college football were run by defensive coordinators who had come from the NFL. The addition of Belichick as the defensive coordinator gives the Huskies the unique distinction of having the sons of Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll as their coordinators.
