Patriots To Promote DeMarcus Covington To Defensive Coordinator

The New England Patriots plan to promote defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator for the 2024 season under first-time head coach Jerod Mayo. The 34-year-old Covington is Mayo's first staff hire. He was hired as a coaching assistant in 2017 and was promoted to defensive line coach in 2020. Former head coach and future Hall of Famer Bill Belichick was the team's defensive play-caller in 2023, but it remains to be seen if Mayo or Covington will call the defensive plays in 2024. New England's defense was their strong suit in 2023, as they allowed the 15th-fewest points per game (21.5), the seventh-fewest total yards per game (301.6), the 11th-fewest passing yards per game (208.4) and the fourth-fewest rushing yards per game (93.2).
