Jerod Mayo To Become Next Patriots Head Coach
11 months ago

The New England Patriots are set to hire linebackers coach Jerod Mayo to replace future Hall of Famer Bill Belichick as the next head coach. At 37 years old, Mayo will become the NFL's youngest head coach, taking over a title that Sean McVay had held since being named the Los Angeles Rams' head coach in 2017. Mayo is a month younger than McVay. He'll become the 15th head coach in Patriots franchise history. He was a linebacker for the team from 2008 to 2015 after being taken in the first round out of Tennessee. Mayo joined Belichick's coaching staff in 2019. Because the team established a succession plan in the contract extension that Mayo signed last offseason, the Patriots were able to forego the standard NFL hiring process. Mayo was named a team captain twice during his playing days, with some referring to him as Bill Jr. because they viewed him as a future coach who spent countless hours at the team facility.
