Bears Hire Eric Washington As Defensive Coordinator
10 months ago

The Chicago Bears hired Eric Washington as their new defensive coordinator on Saturday, according to a source. The 54-year-old will take over after Alan Williams resigned ahead of Week 2 in 2023. Head coach Matt Eberflus took over defensive play-calling duties and is expected to continue calling the Bears' defense in 2024. Washington has spent 20 years as an NFL coach, including the past four with the Buffalo Bills, serving as their assistant head coach and defensive line coach in 2023. The Bills' defense allowed the fourth-fewest points (18.3 points per game) and had the fourth-most sacks (54) this past season. This will be Washington's second stint in Chicago, as he previously worked under Lovie Smith as a defensive assistant from 2008 to 2009 and coached the team's defensive line in 2010.
